Solve one of the season’s biggest garden challenges—over or underwatering.

In the heart of summer, watering can make or break your garden. Too little, and plants wilt or stop producing. Too much, and roots can rot or invite disease. So what’s the sweet spot? Let’s break down some watering wisdom to help you beat the heat and keep your landscape thriving.

When to Water

Early Morning is Best
Watering between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. allows plants to soak up moisture before the heat sets in. It also gives leaves time to dry, helping prevent fungal issues.

Avoid Midday Sun
Watering during the hottest part of the day leads to rapid evaporation—meaning most of that water never reaches the roots. It can also stress plants by creating sudden temperature changes.

Evening: Use Caution
While watering in the evening is better than not at all, damp leaves overnight can encourage mildew. If evening is your only option, aim for the base of the plant, not the foliage.

How to Water

Deep and Infrequent
It’s better to water deeply two to three times a week than to sprinkle daily. Deep watering encourages roots to grow deeper, making plants more drought-tolerant.

Water at the Roots
Overhead watering is often inefficient and promotes disease. Use a soaker hose or watering wand to target the base of the plant.

Mulch Matters
A 2–3 inch layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture, reduce evaporation, and keep roots cooler.

Signs of Overwatering vs. Underwatering

Problem Signs
Overwatering Yellowing leaves, root rot, fungus gnats
Underwatering Wilting, dry or crispy leaves, stunted growth

Check soil moisture by sticking your finger 2–3 inches into the soil. If it feels dry, it’s time to water.

Bonus Tips

  • Containers dry out faster – check them daily.

  • New plantings need more frequent watering until roots establish.

  • Use rain gauges or moisture meters to prevent guesswork.
