Fun Family Activities to Help the Bees This June
June is buzzing with opportunity—and here at Hampton Nursery, we love seeing families connect with nature while doing a little good for the garden. National Pollinator Week (June 16–22) is the perfect time to teach kids how important bees, butterflies, and other pollinators are—and how easy it is to help them thrive.
Let’s turn your backyard into a pollinator playground the whole family can enjoy!
🌸 Plant a Pollinator Patch (or Pot!)
Helping pollinators starts with planting the right flowers—and it’s a perfect hands-on project for little gardeners.
Easy Plants to Attract Pollinators:
-
Zinnias – Bright, bold, and bee-loved
-
Coneflowers – Sturdy and stunning
-
Milkweed – A must-have for monarchs
-
Lavender – Great for bees and calming kids
-
Sunflowers – Instant joy (and a great science lesson)
Try This: Let each child choose a flower, decorate a small pot, and plant it themselves. Add a marker or painted rock with their name on it for a personal touch!
🐝 Build a Bee Hotel
Not all bees live in hives! Many native bees are solitary and need cozy spaces to nest. Making a bee hotel is a great rainy-day craft or weekend project.
You’ll Need:
-
A clean, empty can (like a soup can)
-
Bamboo straws or hollow twigs
-
Twine or wire for hanging
-
Paint and markers (optional!)
Instructions:
-
Cut bamboo or twigs to fit inside the can.
-
Bundle them tightly and fill the can.
-
Let the kids decorate the outside.
-
Hang it horizontally in a sunny, sheltered spot.
It’s a great conversation starter—and a real boost for your local bee population.
🕵️♀️ Go on a Pollinator Scavenger Hunt
Want to turn a walk through the garden into an adventure? A scavenger hunt is a fun, screen-free way to teach kids how to identify pollinators and plants.
Sample List:
-
A bee on a flower 🐝
-
A butterfly with spots 🦋
-
A flower shaped like a star ✨
-
A buzzing sound 🎧
-
A plant with yellow blooms 🌼
-
A hummingbird at work 🐦⬛
Bonus: Offer a small reward for completing the hunt—a seed packet, sticker, or even a popsicle break in the shade.
💡 Why It Matters
Pollinators play a huge role in the food we eat and the flowers we love. Teaching kids to care for bees, butterflies, and birds gives them a deeper connection to nature—and a sense of stewardship they’ll carry for life.
Here at Hampton Nursery, we’re proud to offer pollinator-friendly plants, seeds, and kid-friendly gardening supplies. Ask us how your family can get started—or pick up everything you need for your own backyard bee habitat!
Plant a seed. Grow a memory. Help a bee.
Let’s make June a month full of buzz, blooms, and family fun.
